imovie PSA- NETS 2

This assignment is a video that I made with different video clips, transitions and text that was placed over the graphics. I also incorperated a voice over and music into the movie. The purpose was a public service annoucement trying to get students interested in comming to San Marcos University.

Internet Safety Copyright- NETS 4

This was an assignment done with 5 of my classmates on google docs. We each read lessons geared to teach about internet safety and then completed the assignment that came along with it. This would be a great assignment to do with my students because it teaches them how to use the internet safely.

Classroom newsletter- NETS 1

This assignment was done using microsoft word. I created a parent newsletter using graphics, drop text, borders, and even custom bullets. Students could easily do this type of assignment by using technology in a creative way.

Wiki page- NETS 2

I created my own tool and then shared it with the class on our wiki page. I made a video tool that I embeded on the page and then described what it did and how to use it with your students. Our class can now go to my wiki page and decided if this is a tool they want to use in thier classroom.

EdTech Profile- NETS 5

I went to the Ed tech website and took a quiz on how knowldgable I was on technology. This is a graph of my results from the test. This would be a good test to do with students before you start a technology program so that you can know the skill levels of your class.

Excel Crossword- NETS 2

I used Excell to create a crossword puzzle that has clues all about me. I could use this program with my students because you can take the words out to make it a workable crossword. I used this program to customize and personalize a learning activity to address students' diverse learning styles.

Sel Portrait- NETS 1

Inspiration- NETS 3

This assignment creates an outline of the NETS standards using a creative platform called inspiration. I added pictures and key points of the standards that each assignment met. This is a great way to organize your thoughts before starting a bigger project like the NETS narritives.

Journal # 7: Blogging

Blog/Blogging: Short for Web Log, a blog is an online journal. Blogging is act of writing or updating one's blog. This type of journal can be posted on the internet for others to see.

Examples of elementary blogs:

http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topics/649749:Topic:32329

This was a blog thread all about incorporating blogs into the classroom. I find it interesting that teachers in all different subjects are incorporating this type of technology in their classes. Some teachers are using it just to improve students typing skills while others are having meaningful discussions on current events, history, physical activity and even art. I have learned that this technology has worked in bringing up student participation in many different ways. Teachers have found that their students learned to think for themselves instead of just copying and pasting information. Because other students can read what they are writing, kids are more likely to produce quality work in these situations. Teachers have also found that there is a healthy competitiveness in this type of assignment, compared to an essay that is handed in. The goal of education is to get our students to think for themselves and be a contributing member to society and blogging seems to point our students in the right direction.

How do you asses/correct blogs:

http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topics/649749:Topic:104027

This was a blog mostly about English as second language teachers trying to figure out what is the best way to grade blogs for their students. There were many conflicting views on this subject but most of the teachers agreed that it was not a good idea to correct student’s blogs after they have been posted. For most teachers the goal of this assignment is to get students familiar with writing in another language. The students might get discourage if they see that the teacher has corrected their blog when other class members can see it. One suggestion that was made is to require students to write their blog posts in a word document first and then paste it to their blogs. This way students will have spell check and grammar checks at their finger tips. Another suggestion that teachers made was to have the students fix their own mistakes after you have given them feedback. This way they don't feel like they have failed but rather take pride in making their work better. I'm not sure that I would grade my student’s blogs on spelling or grammar but rather then content and the effort they put into writing their post. I think that the fact that other students can read their posts is push enough to do their best work.

Interactive whiteboards. (2010). Learning and leading with technology, 37(1), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/AugustNo1/L_L_August_2009.htm

"Guide to Interactive whiteboards" was an article about the benefits and different types of interactive white boards. I have personally had experience with an interactive whiteboard system and it is awesome. Teachers have the internet, email, pictures and even speakers to enhance the learning experience. One teacher that I observed used the interactive white board to do a google earth search for a geography unit. The students could see that actual rivers and lakes they were discussing in real time. The teacher also used the microphone throughout the entire day so that all the students could hear.

Are interactive white boards realistic in the schools budget?

Many schools have already started adding interactive white boards to their classrooms. The Poway Unified School District has over 10 schools with this new technology. Overhead projectors are expensive and each classroom has one yet they are outdated and not functional in the technology world today. Some schools may not be able to afford this new technology but teachers need to speak with their administration and school board to bring forth the importance of technology in the classroom. This technology will cut prep time and vigorous work setting up units for teachers, therefore cutting costs in the long run.

What are some things you can do with an interactive white board?

Teachers can access internet sights that will be brought up on the white boards for all students to see. Teachers can play a PowerPoint presentation, imovie or even slide shows using interactive white boards. Teachers can show printed pages as well as overheads and even we=rite in real time on a piece of paper for students to see. Teachers can play music and talk over a microphone that can be heard inside the classroom. Some white boards even have a touch screen that can be accessed right on the white board instead of using the computer.

Learning and leading with technology, 37(2), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/SeptemberOctoberNo2/e_Learning_Programs_Come_in_All_Shapes_a.htm

E-Learning Programs Come in All Shapes and Sizes", is an article about bringing virtual teachers into the classroom. In very rural areas like Alaska it is hard to get quality teachers for the students in that area. In some cases teachers are teaching 5 different grade levels in one school. In Alaska they have started to bring in virtual teachers for everything from science, to math to art. I think this is a great tool for schools that can't get quality teachers or even to save money by sharing teachers throughout the district.

Can Students learn without a teacher in the classroom?

In the Alaska school district there were several schools that were considered failing under the no child left behind act. After switching to this model of teaching many of the schools have moved to passing schools. The district has found that they can get quality teachers to interact with their students all over the United States. I do think that students might respect a teacher that is actually in the classroom but in this area it is near impossible to get quality teachers in person.

What are some benefits of online courses?

Online courses expand the range of courses and opportunities offered to students. Sometimes schools will only offer classes if they fill up and online course offer the course regardless of how many students take it. This type of education provides courses for students whose schedules prevent them from taking a course when it is offered. Many athletes are forced to take courses they do not have any interest in just because it fits their schedule. Virtual teachers and online course also provide equity for students who cannot access courses. Students in low income districts may not have fun courses that are offered. This allows them to still have access to art, physical education and even second language courses. The most important thing that online courses provide, an experience for students who will become lifelong learners and use 21st-century technologies to access online learning throughout their lives. Students will be proficient in using technology because it is a part of their everyday life.

Doug, j. (2010). Computing in the clouds. Learning and leading with education, 37(4), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/DecemberJanuaryNo4/Computing_in_the_Clouds.htm

"Computing in the Clouds" was a great article about free programs for teachers to use with their students and for themselves. California is in a major budget crisis and our schools are seeing the negative effects. Programs have been cut, sports eliminated and students are the ones who are suffering. Cloud computing is one thing that can help technology to stay in the curriculum for no cost to the schools. Students can use google documents to collaborate in real time over the internet, or they can use online storage spots so they do not have to purchase a zip drive. This ensures that students do not loose their work and the great news is that its free!!!

What happens if there is no internet access?

When there is no internet google docs can still be accessed. There are other programs however they need to have internet access in order to be used. This will not be a problem for most schools because they have internet, but for those people that don’t, there are free places you can go to get internet access. The city libraries, Starbucks and Panera bread all have free internet access at their locations for the public to use.

What different things can be done under cloud computing?

Email, web searching and bookmarking, word processing presentations and spreadsheets, photo storage and editing, webpage editing and web mastering and school specific tasks. Google mail is a free email service. Delicious is a free bookmarking cite that can be embedded on your personal blog sit that is also free on blogger.com. PowerPoint, excel and Microsoft spread sheets are all free on doogle.com. Photo bucket is a free storage site for photos. You can also make grade books, do accounting and web based management systems.

Kate, c. (2010). Were not In kansas anymore. Learning and leading with education, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/MarchAprilNo6/Issue_Oriented_We_re_Not_in_Kansas_Anymo.htm

The "Were not in Kansas anymore", article was a great insight on digital citizenship. I think that all students should be held responsible for online behavior and this should be taught in our schools. Today our students will use technology in almost everything they do and it is our job as teachers to give them the information necessary to keep them safe. I like that the author talked about the NET-S standards and how digital citizenship is a big part of the standards. Teachers need not be afraid of the changing times because there are resources to help you. "Becoming a Digiteacher in a Digiworld" offers ideas about how you can incorporate digital citizenship concepts across the curriculum and become an effective digital teacher who can model the skills encompassed in the notion of good digital citizenship.

Should parents be held responsible for teaching their children technology standards?

I think that it would be unrealistic to expect parents to teach their students about technology standards. Although parents are usually responsible for teaching manors and etiquette in real life situations, many parents do not have the knowledge and skill to be able to teach their kids about technology. Kids today know a lot more then their parents do because it is part of their everyday life, from Facebook to twitter to Myspace. Teachers need to take responsibility for teaching these standards because it is important that our students be proficient before they leave our school system.

Where could I find out more about the NET-S standards?

You can go to the ISTE website and read all about the standards. There are different age levels with standard guidelines and even sample assessments. The performance indicators give real life example of what a students should be able to do as well. This site has teacher and administration standards for technology too.

NETS Powerpoint- NETS 3

This assignment demonstrates the knowledge and application of technology systems through the use of power point. I created a powerpoint presentation about the NETS standards that included real life example of assignments that students could do to achieve those standards.

NETS Power point Rubric- NETS 2

This assignment provides an example of an assessment aligned with content and technology standards. As a class we created a powerpoint rubric that we could use to grade our peers powerpoint presentations. We used a program called Irubric that students could also use to create rubrics.

Social Bookmarking- NETS 4

1. This cite is an overview of American history in the last century at the Truman library and museum. I was browsing through the different sections and one really cool thing I saw was an educational activity on Sputnik that you can do in your classroom. There are photographs, museum hours, calendar and directions to the museum. This type of Archive can be used in Physical education to find the history of certain sports or athletes. You can ask you students to do research on how the Olympics came about or where basketball came from. This would help them to better connect to the activity and take ownership in their learning.

2. These are the groups that are affected by achievement gaps

* Racial and ethnic minorities
* English language learners
* Students with disabilities
* Boys/girls
* Students from low-income families

Engage school staff in discussions and activities that offer an opportunity to explore attitudes, beliefs, and values related to cultural diversity and cultural competence.

I love to challenge my colleges to think outside the box and find out different ways they can help their students. During a staff meeting this is one point I can bring up to see how we can work together to close this gap for our students. We can do diversity activities that keep the staff engaged and excited to participate in the meetings. Collaboration is very important for teachers and I think that this type of activity could benefit my school as well.

Ensure that your school has a mission statement that commits to cultural competence as an integral component of all its activities. The cultural competence committee should be involved in developing this statement.

I feel that it is very important for schools to have a mission statement that addresses diversity and a strive to fix achievement gaps. All students should feel like they are a part of their schools family and by fixing a schools mission statement I think students will feel like they belong. Parents would support this change and teachers should as well, if your school does not already have a mission statement which includes all students.

Gather and organize resource materials related to culturally diverse groups for use by school staff.

It is the job of educators to keep up to date with what is going on in the world. We can help our school by finding resource materials that can help us to become better teachers. You can even have this as a task for teachers for each monthly meeting so that you can compile a significant list for teachers to reference. This would ensure that your school is aware of achievement gaps and working to fix them.

3. After taking the quiz I am a cyber saint! I have never really been a person to go online that much anyways other then to check my own email. When I was in middle school I was constantly on Instant messaging and some bad comments were said to people but my parents monitored everything I did so there wasn't really any chance to act out. Other then that I am pretty good with my internet manners.

I learned the four types of cyber bullies and they include:

* The Vengeful Angel
* The Power-Hungry or Revenge of the Nerds
* The “Mean Girls”
* The Inadvertent Cyber bully or “Because I Can”

I think it is important to know why someone is a cyber bully in order to stop this type of behavior. When kids feel hurt there are different ways to talk to them and let them know that retaliation is not the answer if that if why they are bullying. But in the case of the mean girl bully this is a malicious act and should have bigger punishment in my opinion. In the case of the vengeful angle these students feel like they are protecting someone so it is okay to be a online bully. This type of person needs to understand that retaliation is not the answer to cyber bullying and that they are doing the same thing in essence as the person who bullied them or their friend. The cyber bully that can prevented the easiest is the Inadvertent Bully. This person is not aware that they are even bullying someone and with prevention classes they could be prevented from bullying online. This can help my in the classroom to identify if a student is a cyber bully and how to solve the problem.

4. Subject Access: I chose to explore the health and fitness subject access because I want to be a Physical education and health teacher. This site has many amazing links that I have already used through my undergrad program at Chico state. One site that I will use in my future classroom is PE central. This site has lesson plans and professional organizations that benefit physical education teachers. There is also equipment you can buy and assessment tools for physical education. The lesson plans are broken down into grade level and also by specific activities. I have used this tool to help me plan interesting ideas for lesson plans in the past and I will use this as a reference when I have my own class.
Teacher helpers: One thing I saw that can be helpful under teachers helpers was the presentation overviews. This tool can give you an overview of all the different presentations that Kathy has posted. This will save you time so that you can make sure that this is a presentation you would like to attend. After choosing the presentation you would like to attend you can then search under upcoming presentations to find the dates and times they are available.

5. Bodily Kinesthetic 75%
Interpersonal 75%
Logical- Mathematical 56%

I watched the project learning video in Portland, Maine. This school is a project based learning system where students all have their own computer and their assignments are all projects that can cross over into different classes. Students can learn on Google maps in geography how to find artifacts throughout their city that they can then photograph and research in history and then make their own art piece in art class. I think this is a great way to bridge achievement gaps for students by putting them all on the same playing field. Students can actually apply real world assignments that interest them. These type of schools have worked well in impoverished areas where the drop out rate was almost 80% of the students. These numbers have dropped drastically to less then 20% after they changed to project based learning. This is going to be more work for the teachers because they must collaborate the entire year but it is clear that students benefit from this type of learning.

6. The grade I chose was 9-12. The subject was health. The topic was on how the media projects images of how girls should look. This was a powerful lesson about body image and how the media has made girls turn to eating disorders. This particular student took action and started a positive body image club on her schools campus. She was personally affected by this issue because one of her friends had developed an eating disorder and she felt helpless. This lesson can be used in the classroom because this is something that girls deal with everyday. During health lessons teachers can bring up the fact that the media is portraying women in an unhealthy manor. You could give real time facts about what a healthy woman looks like. Too many girls think that the 100 lb model is normal when in fact healthy women should be much heavier. I think that all girls need a lesson on body image and it should be talked about instead of swept under the rug.

7. Powder cocaine (largely used by wealthy people) and crack cocaine (largely used by economically disadvantaged people) contain roughly the same amount of the drug per gram. Under federal law, how much of these substances must an individual be convicted of possessing to be sentenced to a mandatory minimum of five years in prison? 500 powder and 5 of crack cocaine

It was very interesting to me that someone could possess less then 500 grams of a powered drug and not be sent straight to jail. It seems to me that this is a very dangerous drug and that sounds like way to much to be in possession of. I thought that it would be the same amount for each of these drugs but one is 5 grams and the other is 500 grams.

In a 2007 study, UNICEF rated the treatment of children in the 23 wealthiest countries in the world based on 40 indicators of child well-being. Which two countries received the lowest ratings? The U.S. and the U.K.

I find this bit of information very sad but i am not surprised. The U.S. has made a business out of health and people just want to make more money. I watched a film made by Michael Moore about the health care system and insurance and it blew me away. There was one man who cut his fingers off during a saw accident and his insurance would only cover to reattach one finger even though the doctors had the ability to reattach both fingers. This is so sad and needs to be changed in this country. We are at the top of the line with technology but we have the worst health care system.

8. I got a 30% on the quiz.

I think it is important to teach your students about nettiquette because they should be respectful when using the computer. Some students may not know that by using all caps they are in essence shouting and this may offend another user. Also there are certain slang terms that they need to know in order to participate in chats and they may get lost if you have not taught them these things. For example if I sent someone this symbol ;) they might not know what I am talking about. But to someone who know Emoticons they would know that I am winking at them or being sarcastic! I think it is really important for students to remember that they are talking to an actual human on the other end of that computer as well and this website had rules to help the student while on the internet.

I think that this type of assignment will get the students more involved and excited about learning. With the poetry unit that was the example the students were very involved in the project and they made more comments then was even expected of them. I think the story about how the student posted to work for the teacher knowing that she had forgot is amazing. This students figured out how to create the document and saved the lesson for the teacher. I this demonstrates that the students enjoyed the work and were more inclined to do the assignments. I would love to use something like this in physical education to help students monitor their physical fitness. Students could give others tips and help to encourage them on their journey.

Is the work involved in setting up a wiki worth it for the students?

I think that the initial set up of this tool will take more work but in the long run the teacher will do less. The students take responsibility and create their posts while the teacher sits back and monitors their comments. Teachers job is to create the lesson plans and it is expected that they should spend time outside of the classroom to reflect and make their lessons better.

Could students feelings get hurt from a forum like this...would this affect their learning?

I think that if the teacher sets up guidelines and expectations for this assignment that students would respect each other. This would also force them to produce better quality of work because their peers will see the results. When students are set up to succeed them I believe they will.

I love the idea of skpe! I have been using skype for the last year to communicate with relatives that live across the country. When my grandfather was in the hospital we streamed my cousins entire wedding so that he could be a part if it. She got to speak with him during the wedding and he could see and hear everything! I think incorporating this technology in the classroom is a great idea. It is more cost effective to Skpe with another professional that can enhance your lesson rather then having them come into the classroom. This is relatively cheap and easy to use and would be a great tool for teachers. I think that students would benefit and would buy in to their learning!

Could a physical education teacher use skype in the classroom?

I think that this could definitely be using in a physical education setting. Teachers could have professional athletes or nutrition expects to talk and interact with the students. Students would enjoy this type of interaction and it would be different from the day to day regular activities.

Would teachers have to get parent permission to use this type of technology?

I think that this all depends on the district you are working in. But it is a good idea to get parent permission in the beginning of the school year when all the paperwork is handed out. If you send out news letters each month you can also let parents know that a speaker will be coming that month and give information about them

This type of learning is exciting and should be implemented in the classroom. I believe that students would benefit from talking to other students in different countries. Students would learn respect for other cultures as well as citizenship. The younger we start our students in programs that are monitored in a classroom the more they will learn about being productive and safe on the internet. Students now are starting to play on computers as young as kindergarten and I think educators should take advantage and teach then the right way to communicate on the internet as young as possible. I also like that idea that students are encourage to ask questions not only about the subjects they are studying but about life in general. This type of learning will make for well rounded individuals!

Will parents allow this type of learning in the classroom?

There are so many kids today that already have their own computers and are allowed to browse the internet unsupervised. Our kids need to be taught good habits for using the web at a young age so they can make good decisions in the future. I also believe that having students in an online journal will make it easier to track their progress throughout their school years. This type of learning will be in a classroom supervised by a teacher and the website is maintained 24 hours a day. If parents were given the facts and they understood how beneficial it was to learning, I believe that would not only be excited about it but also support it.

How could you use Digiteen in physical education?

I think that students in different countries could benefit by sharing information about how they exercise. Students could also talk about their different diets and how that plays a role on their physical fitness as well. Students could try each others workout strategies and keep a journal about what works for them. This would be easy to implement in the class and would be a fun way for students to participate in physical education.

This is an interesting way to present content knowledge for students. There are many different types of learning styles and this is one more way to get students excited about education. Essays can be boring and many students do not write them until the night before the assignment is due. This story board ensures that students are engaged in the activity and working together in groups. When students are interested in a project they are more likely to actually learn rather then doing to project just because they have to.

Do students with a low technology level do poorly in this type of assignment?

I think that all students have the potential to do well on this assignment. There is class time taken to explain the program so that each student can succeed. If teachers make their own groups they can also put more advanced students with lower technology students so they can help other students. It is all up to the teacher how much time they put into planning for this assignment.

Is this more work for the teacher?

When a teacher starts any new lesson they are going to spend more time planning then a unit they know like the back of their hand. However this project takes out the assessment part of another project like reading 30 essays so in the long run I think this project evens out. There are many different subjects that this project can work for and I think the students would have more fun in this type of assignment.

I think that this type of field trip is a more reasonable way for students to learn outside of the classroom. With all the budget cuts in California it is almost impossible to get funding for a worthwhile field trip. This new technology of Interactive Virtual field trips is even more interesting to me. There are actual people who can talk and interact with the students, which can make them feel like they are actually out of the classroom. I would definitely consider this type of field trip for my students because I feel that it would be beneficial to the learning process.

Can Interactive Virtual field trips be used in physical education?

I think that this type of field trip would be a a great tool for physical education. Teachers could use this tool to link math or science to the learning process for physical fitness. Not many physical education teachers are given the opportunity to get students on field trips for this subject because of the cost. This would be a way to put real life applications to physical fitness without spending an arm and a leg. Teachers could do anatomy lesson, physiology lessons or even link math lessons to certain sports. I think it would help the students "buy in" to physical education with this added element. Many times students will say that physical education is not important because they will never use it, but with this tool we can start to move towards a comprehensive model of physical education that will benefit our students in the long run.

What can you do if you do not have a video conferencing unit?

I think you could try to apply for grant money or hold a fund raising event in your school. If your principal can see all the benefits this unit would bring to the school, then I think they would be more willing to he;p you out.

All about Bree

Hi!!! My name is Breeanna Michelle White. I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, California by my three awesome parents. I lived with my mom and step dad throughout high school but saw my dad regularly. I graduated from Rancho Bernardo high school in 2004. I attended California State University, Chico and graduated in the Fall of 2008. While at Chico I recieved a scholership for track and field untill I tore all the ligaments in my ankle and was not longer able to compete. As a senior I played for the club volleyball team at Chico state and we finished in the final four at nationals. I am the oldest of 4 girls in my family. I am 24 years old, my sister Brigjette is 23, Kelley is 22 and Katie is 20 years old. My parents definiatly had their hands full! I have three dogs (all boys of course) named KC, Chico, and Rascall. I enjoy surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding and just about any sport I can get my hands on. I want to Become a Physical Education and health teacher for high school students when i complete the credential program.

I am not a computer person at all. When I was 10 years old I had a tramatic experience where I lost my entire project the day it was due, and ever since then I've had an aversion to computers. I am a PC user but I find myself liking Mac more and more. On a daily basis I use my cell phone to go on twitter or facebook, check my emal and browse youtube. I do own a laptop but it seems to break down more then it works and this has also left a bad taste in my mouth. I am currently using windows 2007 for my pc but I also have windows 2003.

The California State University, San Marcos mission statment exeplifies what an effective teacher should be. I beleive that all teachers should strive to be lifelong learners because socity is always changing and teachers should give their students the most current information possible. I also like the fact that the mission statement strive for inclusion of all students. I beleive that all children can benefit from an education and should be given the opportunity to learn.
