1. This cite is an overview of American history in the last century at the Truman library and museum. I was browsing through the different sections and one really cool thing I saw was an educational activity on Sputnik that you can do in your classroom. There are photographs, museum hours, calendar and directions to the museum. This type of Archive can be used in Physical education to find the history of certain sports or athletes. You can ask you students to do research on how the Olympics came about or where basketball came from. This would help them to better connect to the activity and take ownership in their learning.
2. These are the groups that are affected by achievement gaps
* Racial and ethnic minorities
* English language learners
* Students with disabilities
* Boys/girls
* Students from low-income families
Engage school staff in discussions and activities that offer an opportunity to explore attitudes, beliefs, and values related to cultural diversity and cultural competence.
I love to challenge my colleges to think outside the box and find out different ways they can help their students. During a staff meeting this is one point I can bring up to see how we can work together to close this gap for our students. We can do diversity activities that keep the staff engaged and excited to participate in the meetings. Collaboration is very important for teachers and I think that this type of activity could benefit my school as well.
Ensure that your school has a mission statement that commits to cultural competence as an integral component of all its activities. The cultural competence committee should be involved in developing this statement.
I feel that it is very important for schools to have a mission statement that addresses diversity and a strive to fix achievement gaps. All students should feel like they are a part of their schools family and by fixing a schools mission statement I think students will feel like they belong. Parents would support this change and teachers should as well, if your school does not already have a mission statement which includes all students.
Gather and organize resource materials related to culturally diverse groups for use by school staff.
It is the job of educators to keep up to date with what is going on in the world. We can help our school by finding resource materials that can help us to become better teachers. You can even have this as a task for teachers for each monthly meeting so that you can compile a significant list for teachers to reference. This would ensure that your school is aware of achievement gaps and working to fix them.
3. After taking the quiz I am a cyber saint! I have never really been a person to go online that much anyways other then to check my own email. When I was in middle school I was constantly on Instant messaging and some bad comments were said to people but my parents monitored everything I did so there wasn't really any chance to act out. Other then that I am pretty good with my internet manners.
I learned the four types of cyber bullies and they include:
* The Vengeful Angel
* The Power-Hungry or Revenge of the Nerds
* The “Mean Girls”
* The Inadvertent Cyber bully or “Because I Can”
I think it is important to know why someone is a cyber bully in order to stop this type of behavior. When kids feel hurt there are different ways to talk to them and let them know that retaliation is not the answer if that if why they are bullying. But in the case of the mean girl bully this is a malicious act and should have bigger punishment in my opinion. In the case of the vengeful angle these students feel like they are protecting someone so it is okay to be a online bully. This type of person needs to understand that retaliation is not the answer to cyber bullying and that they are doing the same thing in essence as the person who bullied them or their friend. The cyber bully that can prevented the easiest is the Inadvertent Bully. This person is not aware that they are even bullying someone and with prevention classes they could be prevented from bullying online. This can help my in the classroom to identify if a student is a cyber bully and how to solve the problem.
4. Subject Access: I chose to explore the health and fitness subject access because I want to be a Physical education and health teacher. This site has many amazing links that I have already used through my undergrad program at Chico state. One site that I will use in my future classroom is PE central. This site has lesson plans and professional organizations that benefit physical education teachers. There is also equipment you can buy and assessment tools for physical education. The lesson plans are broken down into grade level and also by specific activities. I have used this tool to help me plan interesting ideas for lesson plans in the past and I will use this as a reference when I have my own class.
Teacher helpers: One thing I saw that can be helpful under teachers helpers was the presentation overviews. This tool can give you an overview of all the different presentations that Kathy has posted. This will save you time so that you can make sure that this is a presentation you would like to attend. After choosing the presentation you would like to attend you can then search under upcoming presentations to find the dates and times they are available.
5. Bodily Kinesthetic 75%
Interpersonal 75%
Logical- Mathematical 56%
I watched the project learning video in Portland, Maine. This school is a project based learning system where students all have their own computer and their assignments are all projects that can cross over into different classes. Students can learn on Google maps in geography how to find artifacts throughout their city that they can then photograph and research in history and then make their own art piece in art class. I think this is a great way to bridge achievement gaps for students by putting them all on the same playing field. Students can actually apply real world assignments that interest them. These type of schools have worked well in impoverished areas where the drop out rate was almost 80% of the students. These numbers have dropped drastically to less then 20% after they changed to project based learning. This is going to be more work for the teachers because they must collaborate the entire year but it is clear that students benefit from this type of learning.
6. The grade I chose was 9-12. The subject was health. The topic was on how the media projects images of how girls should look. This was a powerful lesson about body image and how the media has made girls turn to eating disorders. This particular student took action and started a positive body image club on her schools campus. She was personally affected by this issue because one of her friends had developed an eating disorder and she felt helpless. This lesson can be used in the classroom because this is something that girls deal with everyday. During health lessons teachers can bring up the fact that the media is portraying women in an unhealthy manor. You could give real time facts about what a healthy woman looks like. Too many girls think that the 100 lb model is normal when in fact healthy women should be much heavier. I think that all girls need a lesson on body image and it should be talked about instead of swept under the rug.
7. Powder cocaine (largely used by wealthy people) and crack cocaine (largely used by economically disadvantaged people) contain roughly the same amount of the drug per gram. Under federal law, how much of these substances must an individual be convicted of possessing to be sentenced to a mandatory minimum of five years in prison? 500 powder and 5 of crack cocaine
It was very interesting to me that someone could possess less then 500 grams of a powered drug and not be sent straight to jail. It seems to me that this is a very dangerous drug and that sounds like way to much to be in possession of. I thought that it would be the same amount for each of these drugs but one is 5 grams and the other is 500 grams.
In a 2007 study, UNICEF rated the treatment of children in the 23 wealthiest countries in the world based on 40 indicators of child well-being. Which two countries received the lowest ratings? The U.S. and the U.K.
I find this bit of information very sad but i am not surprised. The U.S. has made a business out of health and people just want to make more money. I watched a film made by Michael Moore about the health care system and insurance and it blew me away. There was one man who cut his fingers off during a saw accident and his insurance would only cover to reattach one finger even though the doctors had the ability to reattach both fingers. This is so sad and needs to be changed in this country. We are at the top of the line with technology but we have the worst health care system.
8. I got a 30% on the quiz.
I think it is important to teach your students about nettiquette because they should be respectful when using the computer. Some students may not know that by using all caps they are in essence shouting and this may offend another user. Also there are certain slang terms that they need to know in order to participate in chats and they may get lost if you have not taught them these things. For example if I sent someone this symbol ;) they might not know what I am talking about. But to someone who know Emoticons they would know that I am winking at them or being sarcastic! I think it is really important for students to remember that they are talking to an actual human on the other end of that computer as well and this website had rules to help the student while on the internet.
