Kate, c. (2010). Were not In kansas anymore. Learning and leading with education, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/MarchAprilNo6/Issue_Oriented_We_re_Not_in_Kansas_Anymo.htm

The "Were not in Kansas anymore", article was a great insight on digital citizenship. I think that all students should be held responsible for online behavior and this should be taught in our schools. Today our students will use technology in almost everything they do and it is our job as teachers to give them the information necessary to keep them safe. I like that the author talked about the NET-S standards and how digital citizenship is a big part of the standards. Teachers need not be afraid of the changing times because there are resources to help you. "Becoming a Digiteacher in a Digiworld" offers ideas about how you can incorporate digital citizenship concepts across the curriculum and become an effective digital teacher who can model the skills encompassed in the notion of good digital citizenship.

Should parents be held responsible for teaching their children technology standards?

I think that it would be unrealistic to expect parents to teach their students about technology standards. Although parents are usually responsible for teaching manors and etiquette in real life situations, many parents do not have the knowledge and skill to be able to teach their kids about technology. Kids today know a lot more then their parents do because it is part of their everyday life, from Facebook to twitter to Myspace. Teachers need to take responsibility for teaching these standards because it is important that our students be proficient before they leave our school system.

Where could I find out more about the NET-S standards?

You can go to the ISTE website and read all about the standards. There are different age levels with standard guidelines and even sample assessments. The performance indicators give real life example of what a students should be able to do as well. This site has teacher and administration standards for technology too.
